Tigres-Euphrates Mesopotamian Marshlands are in the south and east of Iraq and along the Iranian border. The Mesopotamian marshlands are classified as “fens”, with waters being neutral or alkaline and with relatively high dissolved mineral levels, as opposed to acidic bogs.
The marshes, a rare aquatic landscape in the desert, used to be the largest wetland ecosystem of Western Eurasia. Draining of portions of the marshes to claim land for agriculture and oil exploration began in the 1950s, the draining continued in Saddam Hussein's eviction of “Marsh Arabs” of the Shia Muslim sect.
Recovery of the marsh lands have been hampered by drought and upstream dam construction.
