Lewis Carroll
b. 1-27-1832; Daresbury, Cheshire, England d. 1-14-1898; Guildford, Surrey
British author, clergyman, mathematician, lecturer and photographer Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, who used the pen name Lewis Carroll, is best known as a children's author of the fanciful Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking Glass (1872). He also published The Hunting of the Snark, (1876) and two volumes Sylvie and Bruno (1889 and 1893) under Lewis Carroll, in addition to mathematical papers as Charles Lutwidge Dodgson.
Dodgson was also an accomplished photographer and closely supervised the illustration of Sir John Tenniel that were reproduced by wood engraving for the first edition of ‘Alice’. It is interesting to compare the works as Lewis Carroll as he intended them to be seen, and other editions with color illustrations by such notable illustrators as Arthur Rackham, and the animated visions of Disney.

Alice in Wonderland-
“Have some wine,“ the March Hare said in an encouraging tone.
Alice looked all round the table, but there was nothing on it but tea. “I don't see any wine,” she remarked.
“There isn't any,” said the March Hare.
“Then it wasn't very civil of you offer it,” said Alice angrily.
“It wasn't very civil of you to sit down with being invited,” said the March Hare.
”I didn't know it was your table,” said Alice; “it's laid for a great many more than three.”

John Tenniel illustrated Lewis Carroll's poem about a very vain lobster (chapter 10 of "Alice in Wonderland") with a lobster preening before a mirror on a cloth draped table.
'Tis the voice of the Lobster: I heard him declare
"You have baked me too brown, I must sugar my hair."
* Teachable Moments - The word toilette is used in the original sense of the French word - a dressing table.

LEWIS CARROLL BOOKS, VIDEO, AUDIO
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass - The Mad Hatter, the Ugly Duchess, the Mock Turtle, the Queen of Hearts, the Cheshire Cat- are eccentric characters created by Lewis Carroll, the master of sublime nonsense. In these two brilliant burlesques Carroll created two of the most famous and fantastic novels of all time that stirred imaginations and revolutionized literature. Features line drawings of John Tenniel created for the first edition. (Book Description)
The Annotated Alice: The Definitive Edition, Martin Gardner - The Annotated Alice decodes wordplay and provides solutions to the mathematical riddles Charles Lutwidge Dodgson embedded in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. The Definitive Edition of the Annotated Alice combines the notes of scholar Martin Gardner's 1960 edition with his 1990 update and includes John Tenniel's classic and beloved art with many recently discovered Tenniel pencil sketches.
Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky: A Book of Brillig Dioramas, Graeme Base - "Jabberwocky", a nonsense verse written by Lewis Carroll, is found in Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1871). "Jabberwocky" is often used to teach 'portmanteaux', the fusing of two or more words, or parts of words, to give a combined meaning (international + network = internet). This edition features popup dioramas.
The Hunting of the Snark - a facsimile reprint of a 1876 edition.
Sylvie and Bruno - Carroll's last major work: bizarre adventures of 2 young children, combining Carrollian nonsense, linguistic play and philosophical reflection. 46 illustrations by Harry Furniss. (book description)

Many hints and solutions. Illustrations by John Tenniel. (book description)
Lewis Carroll: A Biography - Under the pen name Lewis Carroll, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson became a legend for his children's books, which broke the constraints of Victorian moralism. Photos. (Book Description)
Dreaming in Pictures: The Photography of Lewis Carroll - Before achieving fame as an author, Lewis Carroll was a prolific and sophisticated photographer, acutely engaged in the art world of Victorian England. This beautifully illustrated book examines Carroll's photographs as the creations of a serious photographic artist-and to demonstrate their importance to the history of photography. This volume serves as the catalogue for an exhibition organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. (from the book description)
Alice in Wonderland (Masterpiece Edition DVD) (1951) Disney version of Lewis Carroll's Children's story - Alice becomes bored and her mind starts to wander, she sees a white rabbit who appears to be in a hurry and chases it into its burrow.
