Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965) was a theologian, philosopher, and widely acclaimed as an organist for interpreting the works of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Deciding “man can no longer live his life for himself alone,” he left his career in Europe to finance, build, and equip a hospital in Equatorial Africa.

He articulated a philosophy of ‘reverence for life’ to get beyond an improverished understanding of reality. Insisting nothing comes to pass without inwardness, he proclaimed a “faith in a new humanity, casting it as a torch into the darkness of our age.”

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952.

Albert Schweitzer quotes ~
• “Reverence for life means to be in the grasp of the infinite, inexplicable, forward-urging Will in which all Being is grounded.”
• “The awareness that we are all human beings together has become lost in war and through politics.”
• “Until he extends the circle of his compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace.”
• “The good conscience is an invention of the devil.”
• “What has been presented as Christianity during these nineteen centuries is only a beginning, full of mistakes, not full blown Christianity springing from the spirit of Jesus.”
• “My life carries its own meaning in itself. This meaning lies in my living out the highest idea which shows itself in my will-to-live, the idea of reverence for life. With that for a starting-point I give value to my own life and to all the will-to-live which surrounds me, I persevere in activity, and I produce values.”
• “True philosophy must start from the most immediate and comprehensive fact of consciousness: "I am life that wants to live, in the midst of life that wants to live.”
