Punctuation marks are symbols which indicate the structure and organization of written language, as well as intonation and pauses to be observed when reading aloud.

Punctuation: Purposeful Pauses - take a breath and take notice -

Comma , - split items in a series, team with a conjuction to divide independent clauses, mark the start of a quote, isolate dependent clauses, separate grouped modifiers, bring order to large numbers, set off dates and places.

Colon : indicate the start of a listing, cordon explanatory phrases, close a formal letter's greeting.

Semicolon ; can be used to connect independent clauses, place before conjuctive adverbs and other phrases that join independent clauses, avoid confusion by separating items or phrases in a listing that require the use of commas.
