text from biographical bookmark-

Johann Strauss the Younger (1825-1899), who was known as the “Waltz King,” was famous as a composer of many Viennese waltzes and operettas.

Of the 500 dance pieces he wrote more than 150 were waltzes. The Blue Danube, Stauss's most famous composition, continues to be a favorite. Also well known were Artist's Life, Wine, Women and Song, Vienna Blood, and Tales from the Vienna Woods.

Of the many successful stageworks written by Strauss, Die Fledermaus was the one accepted as the classical example of Viennese Operatta. Also successful were the Roman Carnival, The Gypsy Baron and A Night in Venice.
