Composer Guiseppe Verdi's opera Aida, set in Egypt, is the story of an enslaved Ethiopian princess named Aida, who loves, and is loved by, Radames, a young Egyptian officer who is also loved by the Egyptian princess Amneris.
The opera was commissioned by Ismail Pasha, Khedive of Egypt and opened at the Khedivial Opera House in December of 1871.
