The Tlingit people live in the Pacific Northwest coastal temperate rainforest and the Alexander Archipelago, spanning the present day border between Alaska and Canada. A matrilineal society that traditionally believes Spirit imbues humans, the natural environment and the everyday objects that are created by artisans for use in their hunter-gatherer culture.

A kachina is a spirit being in the cosmology of the Hopi, Zuni, and Pueblo tribes and representative of the powerful “presence of life in all objects that fill the universe”.

Kachina also refers to the masked tribal dancers in religious ceremonies and the wooden dolls given to children.
