Abdul Ghaffar Khan
b. 1890; British India
d.
1-20-1988; Peshawar (Pakistan), buried in Jalalabad, Afghanistan

Abdul Ghaffar Khan, lifelong pacifist, devout Muslim and follower of Mahatma Gandhi, was a political and spiritual leader known for his non-violent opposition to British Rule in India.

Abdul Ghaffar Khan quotes ~
• “There is nothing surprising in a Muslim or a Pathan like me subscribing to the creed of nonviolence. It is not a new creed. It was followed fourteen hundred years ago by the Prophet all the time he was in Mecca.”
• “My religion is truth, love and service to God and humanity. Every religion that has come into the world has brought the message of love and brotherhood. Those who are indifferent to the welfare of their fellowmen, whose hearts are empty of love, they do not know the meaning of religion.”
• “Today’s world is traveling in some strange direction. You see that the world is going toward destruction and violence. And the specialty of violence is to create hatred among people and to create fear. I am a believer in nonviolence and I say that no peace or tranquility will descend upon the people of the world until nonviolence is practiced, because nonviolence is love and it stirs courage in people.”

Martin Luther King, Jr.
b. 1-15-1929; Atlanta, GA
d. 4-4-1968; Memphis, TN

Martin Luther King, Jr. led millions of people in a non-violent movement to bring an end to the segregation of the races in the United States.

The vision of a community of man in which all are free still provides the basis for continued efforts to overcome domination.

His words eloquently express this passion and this faith: “You ought to believe something in life, believe that thing so fervently that you will stand up with it until the end of your days...” express for him how freedom and hope are realized.

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. (bookmark text)

• “Wars and elections are both too big and too small to matter in the long run. The daily work - that goes on, it adds up.”

Maxine Hong Kingston
b. 10-27-1940; Stockton, CA

Maxine Hong Kingston is an activist, award winning Chinese-American writer and Professor Emeritus at the University of California.

“When we Chinese girls listened to the adults talk-story, we learned...we could be heroines, swordswomen... Night after night my mother would talk-story until we fell asleep. I couldn't tell where the stories left off and the dreams began, her voice the voice of the heroines in my sleep.”
