Pollution, the introduction of contaminants into an environment that causes instability, disorder, harm or discomfort to the ecosystem i.e. physical systems or living organisms, threatens world wide health on all levels.
The worst pollution problems are Groundwater Contamination, Industrial Mining Activities, Metal Smelters and Processing, Radioactive Waste and Uranium Mines, Untreated Sewage, Urban Air Quality, Used Lead Acid Battery Recycling, Contaminated Surface Water, Indoor Air Pollution, Artisanal Gold Mining.
And check out “Gasland”, a movie about the process of ‘fracking’ that creates fractures in rocks to increase the output of a well. The technique also contaminates aquifers with fracturing chemicals and waste fluids that results in permanent health effects, including brain damage and chronic respiratory conditions.
Pollution & Waste Quotes~
• “Our modern industrial economy takes a mountain covered with trees, lakes, running streams and transforms it into a mountain of junk, garbage, slime pits, and debris.” ~ Edward Abbey
• “If civilization has risen from the Stone Age, it can rise again from the Wastepaper Age.” ~ Jacques Barzun
• from the Four Laws of Ecology ~#2. “Everything Must Go Somewhere. There is no “waste” in nature and there is no “away” to which things can be thrown.” ~ Barry Commoner
• “Water and air, the two essential fluids on which all life depends, have become global garbage cans.” ~ Jacques-Yves Cousteau
• “Pollution is nothing but resources we're not harvesting. We allow them to disperse because we've been ignorant of their value.” ~ R. Buckminster Fuller
• “There is a sufficiency in the world for man's need but not for man's greed.” ~ Mohandas K. Gandhi
• “Visual pollution is more poisonous than any other pollution because it kills the soul.” ~ Friedensreich Hundertwasser
• “One of the first laws against air pollution came in 1300 when King Edward I decreed the death penalty for burning of coal. At least one execution for that offense is recorded. But economics triumphed over health considerations, and air pollution became an appalling problem in England.” ~ Glenn T. Seaborg
• “To waste, to destroy our natural resources, to skin and exhaust the land instead of using it so as to increase its usefulness, will result in undermining in the days of our children the very prosperity which we ought by right to hand down to them amplified and developed.” ~ Theodore Roosevelt

Between April 20 and July 15 of 2010 a spill stemming from a sea-floor oil gusher of the Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explosion resulted in the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry.
The spill continues to cause extensive damage to marine and wildlife habitats as well as the Gulf's fishing and tourism industries. In late November 2010, 4,200 square miles of the Gulf were re-closed to shrimping after tar balls were found in shrimpers' nets.
