Composer, conductor, theater director and essayist Richard Wagner is best remembered for his operatic compositions that are called “music dramas”.
Wagner wrote both the music and libretto, creating musical dramas with complex plot elements and characters.
Wagner was known for an unsettled life: being exiled for political expression, love affairs, and nearly constant threat of poverty and creditors. Unfortunately Adolf Hitler liked Wagner's music, which has tainted his reputation.

This portrait of Richard Wagner, by Sir Leslie Ward, also known as “Spy”, was probably for the British magazine Vanity Fair. Published between 1868 and 1914, Vanity Fair, “A Weekly Show of Political, Social, and Literary Wares” became best known for its caricatures of the rich and famous and was Victorian and Edwardian England's equivalent of an entertainment show. Ward also did a portrait of Mark Twain Sir Winston Churchill, and W. S. Gilbert.
