The primary purpose of teeth (tooth singular) is to tear and chew food.

The way teeth grow is called dentition, doctors who care for teeth are called dentists.

  • Carnivores (meat eaters) have pointed sharp teeth for catching food
  • Herivores (plant eaters) have molars for chewing the more difficult to digest plant materials.

Teeth are hard structures and therefore fossilize, becoming important identifiers for palenotologists.
