Pyramids are geometric shaped structures formed by connecting a polygonal base, usually thought of as a square, and a point called an apex, by triangular faces. Pyramids were built by many ancient peoples, most notably the Egyptian and the Mayan cultures.

A ziggurat is a stepped or terraced tower of successively receding stories or levels. Because the tops of ziggurats are flat they are not technically pyramids.
Ziggurats are found in the Middle East, built by the Sumerians, Babylonians and Assyrians of Mesopotania. Because ziggurats were contructed out of mud brick, not many survive. The Ziggurat of Ur was built c. 2100 BC, to worship the moon god Nanna.
The biblical story of the Tower of Babel may have been referred to a ziggurat.
