Pytheas the Greek
f. 350-285 BC; Massalia (modern day Marseilles, France)
Geographer Pytheas made the earliest recorded voyage to Britain, the Baltic, and the Arctic Circle. He is the first Greek to see the midnight sun, link the tides with the moon, and describe amber.
On the Ocean, his periplus or manuscript that “listed, in order, the ports and coastal landmarks, with approximate intervening distances, that the captain of a vessel could expect to find along a shore”, is lost though referenced by Strabos, Diodorus of Sicily, and Pliny the Elder.
However Pytheas was not the first Greek to explore outside the Pillars of Hercules (Strait of Gibraltar). The now lost Massaliote Periplus, from as early as the 6th century BC, was preserved by the 4th century poet Avienus in Ora Maritime (The Maritime Shores). This merchant handbook described the sea routes used by traders from Phoenicia and Tartessus to Iron Age Europe.
Euthymenes, Kolaios of Samos 630bc, polybios, eudoxos of kyzikos, Megalopolis megále pólis (great city), Itinerarium
