November is the 11th month of the year, the name coming from the Latin novem for “nine”. Seem odd? Well, it's all because November was the ninth month in the Roman calendar (and December was the 10th month: decem=ten, the decimal system is base ten, and a dime=10¢), until January and February were added to divide the unnamed winter period.

Cornucopia, the Horn of Plenty, a symbol of abundance originating in ancient Greece, it is said the infant Zeus was fostered by Amaithea, a goat. To honor her, and as a reminder of her generous giving, Zeus created the first cornucopia from her horn and Amaithea in the heavens as the star Capella in the constellation Capricorn.

Events associated with November are Thanksgiving holidays or harvest festivals, celebrated on various dates in different cultures.
It is no accident the Founding Fathers of the United States set the federal election for the Tuesday after the first Monday in November- it would be likely the men of the mostly agricultural society of the fledgling United States would have their crops harvested by that date.
Another event closely associated with the 11th month is the treaty ending World War I signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 at Versailles, France. - a list of more November observancs & dates.
For people living in the northern hemisphere of planet Earth, November is experienced as an Autumn month, the time of the year for harvesting and preparing for the winter. In the southern hemisphere the seasons are reversed: November is spring and May is fall.
The colors most often associated with fall are warm reds, oranges and golds of leaves of deciduous trees. The colorful fall foliage appears when green chlorphyll, which masks the fall color, is no longer replenished as the growing season ends.
Chrysanthemums are the November flower - the scientist Linnaeus derived the name from combining chrys + anthemon, the Greek for golden, (the original color), and flower. Chrysanthemums were first cultivated in ancient China, the Japanese Emperor adopted the flower as his emblem - today the Japanese Chrysanthemum Throne is the oldest continuing monarchy in the world.
