The Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with about 23,000 casualties, was fought on September 17, 1862 near Sharpsburg, Maryland, and Antietam Creek.
Also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg, it was the first major battle in the American Civil War to take place on Northern soil.

Reproduction of a broadside published by the War Department on April 20th, 1865 for the capture of the assassins of Abraham Lincoln. A reward of $50,000 is offered for John Wilkes Booth and $25,000 apiece for his accomplices - John H. Surratt and David C. Herold, were the equivalents of millions of dollars in today's money. The Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton, proclaims in the text: “Let the stain of innocent blood be removed from the land by the arrest and punishment of the murderers”.
