Lincoln Memorial, located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., was dedicated on May 30, 1922.
Built in the form of a Greek Doric Temple, the memorial contains a large seated sculpture of Abraham Lincoln and inscriptions of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and his second inaugural address.
American sculptor Daniel Chester French (b. NH, 1850-1931) best-known work is the sculpture of a seated Abraham Lincoln (1920) at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
The memorial has been the site of many famous gatherings:
In 1939 African-American contralto Marian Anderson performed an Easter Sunday concert to 70,000 at the Lincoln Memorial and a nationwide radio audience, at the suggestion of Eleanor Roosevelt when the Daughters of the American Revolution denied her performing to an integrated audience at Constitution Hall.
On August 28, 1963 Martin Luther King's gave his “I Have a Dream” speech at the Lincoln Memorial.
