Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, French philosopher and paleontologist, primarily wrote on the phenomenon of man and the future of the world.
After working in China on the discovery of Peking Man’s skull, he developed his belief that evolution is an incomplete process. He has become known for his theory that man is evolving, mentally and socially, toward a final spiritual unity.
“Some day after we have mastered the winds, the waves and gravity...we will harness for God the energies of love; and then for a second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire.”

Teilhard, a priest in the Society of Jesus (Jesuit), also taught physics, chemisty, geology; was a stretcher bearer in World War I; suffered from malaria; and was silenced by the Vatican.

People associated with Teilhard include Julian Huxley who wrote the introduction to “The Phenomenon of Man”, Flannery O'Connor's short story collection “Everything That Rises Must Converge” is in reference to a passage in Teilhard's “Omega Point” – “Remain true to yourself, but move ever upward toward greater consciousness and greater love! At the summit you will find yourselves united with all those who, from every direction, have made the same ascent. For everything that rises must converge.” Author Don DeLillo incorporates Teilhard's work and thought into his own; science fiction writer Philip K. Dick's 1977 science fiction novel A Scanner Darkly (movie poster) has a character quoting Teilhard de Chardin.
