Francis “Jack” Johnson

Francis “Jack” Johnson, a musician and prolific composer during the Antebellum period, was the first African American to have his works published as sheet music. He also was the first African American to give public concerts and the first to participate in racially integrated concerts in the United States. Johnson led the first American musical ensemble to present concerts abroad (for the coronation of Queen Victoria, and he introduced the promenade concert style (strolling in public areas while orchestra plays) to America.

Zoltán Kodály

Zoltan Kodály was a composer, violinist, and ethnomusicologist who established a set of principles that became the basis for what is called the “Kodály Method” used in music education.
He was friends with the composer Bela Bartok, sharing interest in folk music.
FYI ~ one of the characters in Close Encounters of the Third Kind is named Zoltan Kodaly, and hand signals designed by John Curwen, are used in conjunction with tonal sounds to communicate with the aliens.
