Falstaff, composer Guiseppe Verdi's last and possibly greatest opera, is a comedy based on William Shakespeare's Merry Wives of Windsor. Falstaff is a comic character from three Shakespeare's plays, the aforementioned 'Wives', and Henry IV, part 1 and 2. Other works based on the fictional Sir John Falstaff are Chimes at Midnight (Orson Welles), an Antionio Saliere opera, a symphonic study by Elgar, an opera names "Sir John in Love", and in 'My Own Private Idaho", the petty thief character Bob.
