Teacher, writer and philosopher Amos Bronson Alcott is best remembered as the father of author Louisa May Alcott.
His educational philosophy was informed by Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi and through his association with Transcendentalism. His forward-thinking social ideas were expressed in two projects, an unconventional school and an utopian community known as “Fruitlands”.
FYI - he passed his social activisim on to this daughter Louisa - she was involved in the women’s suffrage movement, canvassing door to door to encourage women to register to vote, and in 1879 became the first woman in Concord to register to vote in the village’s school committee election.
Amos Bronson Alcott quotes ~
• “The true teacher defends his pupils against his own personal influence. He inspires self-distrust. He guides their eyes from himself to the spirit that quickens him. He will have no disciple.”
• “We climb to heaven most often on the ruins of our cherished plans, finding our failures were successes.”
• “A government, for protecting business only, is but a carcass, and soon falls by its own corruption and decay.”
• “One must be a wise reader to quote wisely and well.”
