Microbiologist, experimental pathologist, environmentalist, humanist, Rene Dubos, was also the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction for So Human An Animal, and is credited as an author of a maxim “Think globally, act locally”.

Dubos “devoted most of his professional life to the empirical study of microbial diseases and to the analysis of the environmental and social factors that affect the welfare of humans.”

Businessman and social activist Jean Henri Dunant witnessd the aftermath of the Battle of Solferino in modern day Italy. His memories and experiences recorded in A Memory of Solferino inspired the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in 1863. The 1864 Geneva Convention was based on Dunant's ideas. In 1901 he received the first Nobel Peace Prize together with Frédéric Passy.

Marguerite Durand was a French actress who turned to journalism after a failed marriage, and then became a women's rights activist after covering the Congrès Féministe International in 1896. Her daily newspaper, La Fronde, was a successor to Hubertine Auclert's La Citoyenne.

Mary Dyer was hanged on Boston Common for the crime of being a Quaker in Massachusetts. She is one of four known as the Boston Martyrs (with Marmaduke Stephenson, William Robinson [Oct 27, 1659], and William Leddra [3-14-1661]). Her action constitutes the first great act of civil disobedience to take place on American soil.

FYI ~ Mary Dyer was a follower of Anne Hutchinson.
