Astronomy is the scientific study of celestial objects and phenomena that originate outside Earth's atmosphere. Astronomy, one of the oldest sciences, is is concerned with the formation and evolution of the universe. The word astronomy is from the Greek astron (star) + nomos (law), or the law of the stars.
Archeological evidence shows ancient civilizations such as Babylon and the Maya measured time based on the periodical appearance and disappearance of celestial objects. Stonehenge is perhaps the most noted ancient observatory. Astrology, which shares a common root with astronomy, is the belief that the position of objects in the sky can provide understanding about events in human life.

• “There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.” ~ Douglas Adams
• “There seems to be a kind of order in the universe, in the movement of the stars and the turning of the earth and the changing of the seasons, and even in the cycle of human life. But human life itself is almost pure chaos. Everyone takes his stance, asserts his own rights and feelings, mistaking the motives of others, and his own.” ~ Katherine Anne Porter, Writers at Work interview, 1963
• “The very nature of the objective universe turns any spiritual faith and ideals into courageous acts of subjectivity, constantly vulnerable to intellectual negation.” ~ Richard Tarnas
• “Helped are those who create anything at all, for they shall relive the thrill of their own conception and realize a partnership in the creation of the Universe that keeps them responsible and cheerful.” ~ Alice Walker
• “I believe a leaf of grass is no less than the journey-work of the stars.”~ Walt Whitman
• “The whole theory of the universe is directed unerringly to one single individual.”~ Walt Whitman

EARTH FROM SPACE POSTERS
It was not until the twentieth century that there were maps of the entire planet, pictures of Earth taken from space are incredibly useful... And they are extraordinarily beautiful.
|
|
|
GALAXIES POSTERS
A galaxy is a system of stars, interstellar gas & dust, and dark matter, bound by a gravitational field.
|
|
|
HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE POSTERS
Named for astronomer Edwin Hubble, the telescope is in orbit around Earth, outside of its atmosphere, which allows for very sharp photographs.
|
|
|
MOON POSTERS
The natural satellite of a planet is called a moon. Earth has one moon and is usually referred to as “The Moon”. Names from mythology associated with the moon include Selene, Phoebe and Artemis (Greek), and Luna and Diana (Roman).

STAR CHARTS
A star is a massive body of plasma in outer space which is currently, or has in the past, produced energy through nuclear fusion and emits light because of its intense heat. All stars, except the Sun, appear as twinkling lights from Earth because of the atmosphere.

|
THE SUN
The Sun, sometimes refered to by its Latin name, Sol, is a star at the center of our solar system.

ASTROLOGY
Astrology is the systems, traditions and beliefs that the positions of celestial bodies - planets, the moon, and stars - influence events and human fate on Earth. Modern astronomy and astrology grew out of ancient astronomy.

Carl Sagan quote from a public lecture delivered October 13, 1994 - “Look at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every ’superstar,’ every ’supreme leader,’ every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam.
The earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals, so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light.
Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.
The earth is the only world so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes, settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.
It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps better no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. It underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.”
