John Stevens Henslow

Henslow, whose passion for plants overcame his interest in rocks, was an influential botany professor at Cambridge. Henslow's student was Charles Darwin, with whom he had a life long friendship; he was also a correspondent of John James Audubon who named a sparrow for Henslow.

James Hutton

James Hutton, the father of modern geology, was also a physician, naturalist, and experimental agriculturalist. Hutton developed the idea of “deep time”, proposing that geological evidence indicated the Earth was much older than his contemporaries thought, and that the Earth was really a living “superorganism”, changing through time.
