Fred Haise, one of the 24 people to have flown to the Moon, was part of the Apollo 13 mission. He was also the test pilot for the Space Shuttle Enterprise that was used for approach and landing tests (never in space.)

Aviation pioneer Geoffrey de Havilland was a pilot and aircraft engineer, designing some of the most famous airplanes in history.

FYI ~ De Havilland was cousins with actresses Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine.

d. 1888; Newark, New Jersey

W.S. “Mad-man” Henson, patented a “Henson Aerial Steam Carriage” in 1843, and formed the Aerial Transit Company to raise money to construct the machine. His scale models were never able to fly; the image of the flying machine were created to advertise the new possibility of air flight.

One of the wealthiest men in the world Howard Hughes was also a pilot, airplane manufacturer and movie producer who make the film Hell's Angels.

James Irwin was the Lunar Module pilot for Apollo 15 (the fourth human lunar landing) and the eighth person to walk on the Moon.

Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in space, served as a STS-47 Endeavour Mission Specialist. Jemison is also a medical doctor, and served in the Peace Corps.

Amy Johnson, who held many long-distance flight records in the 1930s, died while ferrying a plane.

Martin and Osa Johnson (married May 1910) are remembered for their documentary travel films which introduced exotic places to Americans in the early part of the the 20th century.

Martin Johnson began his adventures as a crew member and cook for Jack London's 1907-09 voyage across the south Pacific aboard the Snark.

In 1932 the Johnson's learned to fly and purchased two Sikorsky amphibious planes. In 1934 they flew the length of Africa filming scenes of large herds of animals. They were the first to fly over Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya.

Osa Johnson's 1940 biography I Married Adventure was a best seller.

FYI ~ Look for references to the Johnson's in movies like Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004) and Night at the Museum (2006), Kate Spade's fashion bags, and the poem “In the Waiting Room” by Elizabeth Bishop.

Hugo Junkers

d. 2-3-1935; under house arrest

Engineer Hugo Junkers pioneered the use of all metal, cantilvered winged monoplanes that eliminated external bracing.

FYI ~ Junkers was a pacifist and socialist who was in conflict with the German Nazis, eventually having his patents and companies confiscated.
