Areas of Child Development Poster (Part 1 of 6)

Social / Emotional Development emphasizes many skill that increase self-awareness and how children act. Social skills and emotional development (reflected in the ability to pay attention, make transitions, and cooperate) are very important parts of growth.

Physical Development is about babies wanting to explore their world. Babies are eager to move their eyes, mouths, and bodies toward the people and objects that comfort and interest them. As they grow, children are determined to practice and master movement, balance, and fine-motor skills.

Intellectual Development starts at birth. From the very start, young children are aware of their surroundings and interested in exploring them. From the first weeks of life, babies are active learners. The gather and organize knowledge about their world.

Playing with Children Poster (Part 4 of 6)
Children need to play in order to grow and learn, In fact, play is sometimes called children's work.

Infant, 0-12 months - Turn routine activities into games for infants. Sing, talk, make eye contact, or imitate sounds. Choose safe toys and objects that catch babies' attention.
Toddlers, 1-2 years - Give toddlers simple toys that can be taken apart and put together again. Safe household items, such as measuring cups and spoons, are ideal. Toddlers will also enjoy simple puzzles, storybooks annd large crayons with paper. Walking and naming are fun, too.
Preschooler, 3-5 years - Engage preschoolers in make-believe play to try out different roles. They will like to dress up in old clothes, hats, and jewelry. Use puppets, and other toys to encourage use of imagination. Preschoolers also enjoy writing and drawing.

The Best Toys for Children Should Be: Safe and Healthy, Interesting, Educational, Developmentally Appropriate.
