Horses, in the suborder Hippomorpha, are large, grazing, and fast running, odd-toed ungulates (hoofed) with long legs that end in one toe. Horses have long heads and their necks have manes.
Horses are herbivores (plant eaters) and graze on grasses: in fact that characteristic served to keep the Asian Mongol invaders from entering Africa because the Middle East was lacking in easy food for their horses.
Male adult horses are stallions, female adult horses are called mares; a foal is a horse of either sex less than one year old, a yearling is a horse of either sex between one and two years. A colt is a male horse under age four, a filly is a female horse under age four; a gelding is a castrated male horse (any age).
• “Over the river and through the wood/To grandfather's house we go/The horse knows the way/To carry the sleigh/Through the white and drifted snow.” ~ Lydia Maria Child, Thanksgiving Day, 1845
• “It is exciting to me that no matter how much machinery replaces the horse, the work it can do is still measured in horsepower ... even in the new age. And although a riding horse often weighs half a ton and a big drafter a full ton, either can be led about by a piece of string if he has been wisely trained. This to me is a constant source of wonder and challenge.” ~ Marguerite Henry

The hoof of a horse has to carry the proportional weight of the horse, making the health and strength of the hoof very important. A farrier, the person who cares for horses feet, uses blacksmithing skills to make and adjust metal shoes with veterinary knowledge, to care for the feet of horses.
