Domesticated dogs, in the mammalian Order Carnivora, family canidae, are closely related to wild dogs such as the Dingo, and coyotes, wolves, and jackals; foxes are of the vulpes genus.
Physical characteristics of dogs include powerful muscles, teeth for catching, holding and tearing, small feet and walking on their toes (digitigrades) with the ability for both endurance, sprinting, and jumping.
There are approximately 800 recognized breeds of domesticated dogs, ranging in size from Chihauhaus to Irish Wolfhounds. Dogs are trained for working (ie. herding sheep), sports (racing), and as companions, earning the name “man's best friend.”
