Emil Nolde, née Hansen
b. 8-7-1867; village of Nolde, Duchy of Schleswig (now southern Denmark)
d. 5-15-1956; Paris

Painter and printmaker Emil Nolde was one of the first Expressionist and exhibited with Die Brücke, the Berlin Secession and Der Blaue Reiter. He was in support of the Nazis, then found his work labeled “degenerate” and he was forbidden to paint after 1941. During the war years he worked in watercolors which he was able to hide.

Emil Nolde quote ~
• “There is silver blue, sky blue and thunder blue. Every color holds within it a soul, which makes me happy or repels me, and which acts as a stimulus. To a person who has no art in him, colors are colors, tones tones ... and that is all. All their consequences for the human spirit, which range between heaven to hell, just go unnoticed.”
