Mushroom is a term applied to the above ground fruiting body of fungus. Many varieties of edible mushrooms are high in protein and fiber, providing both vitamins and minerals, in the diets of many cultures.

Young, fresh mushrooms can be eaten raw in salads or dressed with oil and lemon juice. Raw mushrooms can be fried, grilled, baked or stewed in their own juice and are often used to enhance the favor of other dishes.

Collecting mushrooms in the wild should not be undertaken by amateurs, as identification of poisonous mushrooms is difficult, and the consequences fatal, if misidentified.
