Benin, the site of the former prominent kingdom of Dahomey, is a small Western African country bordered by Nigeria and Togo on the east and west, Burkina Faso and Niger on the north and the Bight of Benin (Atlantic Ocean) on the south.
The Kingdom of Dahomey became a center of slave trade with the King of Dahomey selling fellow Africans captured in war to European slave traders.
The capital of Benin is Porto-Nova, Portuguese for “New Port”, was established as a port for the slave trade. The largest city and financial center of Benin is Cotonou.
Though the official language of Benin is French, indigenous languages such as Fon and Yoruba are commonly spoken.
