The Republic of Senegal is located in Western Africa, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean, with Mauritania, Mali, Guinea and Guinea-Bissauon the north, east and south sides respectively and surrounding the Gambia.

The area known as Senegal has been inhabited since prehistoric times with subsequent periods of precolonial, colonial, and comtemporary eras. Senegal, as a part of a federation of French colonial territories in Africa was called French West Africa; (others in the federation were Mauritania, French Sudan [Mali], French Giunea [Guinea], Cote d'Ivoire [Ivory Coast], Upper Volta [Burkina Faso], Dahomey [Benin], and Niger.

Today Senegal has a population of about 12.5 million with a third of the population living below the international poverty line of $1.25US/day. The capital city of Senegal is Dakar.

Near Dakar is the island of Goree which was one of the first places Europeans settled in Africa. Goree also has the reputation of being central to the West African slave trade along with Saint-Louis in northern Senegal, the capital of the former Colony of Senegal, and from the Gambia.
