The Republic of Sudan is the largest country in Africa, and 10th largest in the world. Sudan is bordered on the north by Egypt, Libya to the northwest, Chad to the west, Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the southwest, Uganda and Kenya to the southeast, Eritrea and Ethiopia to the east, and the Red Sea to the northeast. Khartoum is the capital of Sudan.
Cultural differences between the wealthier Arab Muslims in the north and the poorer ethnic black, non- Muslim, Africans in the south, along with other political factors, have made Sudan one of the most violent and divided countries in the world. The western Darfur conflict of ethnic cleansing has spread into neighboring Chad, causing much suffering. [Sudan Information Gateway, UN]
