Benito Juarez, a Zapotec Indian from Oaxaca, was the first president of Mexico, serving five terms between 1858-1872.
In 1885 de Juarez was appended to Acapulco in honor of Juarez.

Pancho Villa (1878- 1923) was a leader in the Mexican Revolution. Villa is notorious for his bold raid into New Mexico for arms when he felt betrayed by Woodrow Wilson's diplomatic stance; General John J. Pershing commanded the failed 1916-17 Punitive Expedition to capture Villa.
