the Civil Rights Movement

b. 5-15-1938; Chicago, Illinois

Diane Nash helped found and was the strategist of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. She also worked for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with Martin Luther King, Jr.

Nichelle Nichols

Actress, singer and voice artist Nichelle Nichols is most remembered as communications officer Lieutenant Nyota Uhura aboard the USS Enterprise in the popular Star Trek television series. A black woman in an authorative role was unpredented in the 1960s and both astronaut Mae Jemison and actress Whoopi Goldberg have cited Nichols as inspiration and encouragement for their career paths.

Nichols also sang with Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton before turning to acting.

Mrs. Obama has employed her position to focus attention on reversing the trend of childhood obesity and encouraged healthy eating by planting the first White House vegetable garden since Eleanor Roosevelt served as First Lady.

Mrs. Obama is also a lawyer, graduating from Princeton and Harvard Law School, and a mother.
