Miles Davis
b. 5-26-1926; Alton, IL
d. 9-28-1991
Trumpeter, bandleader, and composer Miles Davis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as “one of the key figures in the history of jazz”. He was a member of the Charlie Parker Quintet, formed the Miles Davis Nonet (nine musicians) that recorded the tracks that became the album Birth of the Cool, created several jazz groups over the years, and his Kind of Blue album is considered the best-selling jazz record of all time.
FYI ~ Davis dropped out of the Juillard School of Music, though he acknowledged studying there had given him a “grounding in music theory”, to play in jam sessions and perform professionally in Harlem.
