Green Tara
Tara is Tibet's beloved goddess. Her name, scholars say, may have once meant “star,” but for Newars and Tibetans it means “liberating woman.” Tara's green color is related to her dynamic, compassionate personaity, which always seeks ways to liberate beings from suffering and danger. Her hands hold the stems of lotuses; her foot is outstretched in the posture of royal ease. The painting is done in a style unique to modern Newari work. It has a painted border inspired by the brocades that Tibetans use to frame their paintings. Around the brocade is a frame containing a Chinese-inspired dragon and a lion that includes features of both Nepali and Tibetan mythological beasts. Hundreds of years ago, Newari artists also used animals as a framing device not of a whole picture, as here, but as part of the architecture of the throne on which a central deity sat. It is a signatues crest, inspired perhaps by royal and military design. The cest is of a bird and a hunter. The banner tells the name of the diety, arya Taraya namah, “Hail to the Noble Tara.” Below the crest the artistt has signed his name, Siddhimuni Sakya. This is a totally modern practice. Traditionally, Newar and Tibetan artist always worked anonymously. The style of the face and figure is also quite modern and owes something to modern Indian poster art as well as to traditional Newari style.
Tara is the name for a set of Buddhas or bodhisattvas of similar aspects or qualities. Green Tara is known as the Buddha of enlightened activity.
