• “Every man's life is a fairy tale written by God's fingers.”
• “Why, but he hasn't got anything on!” they all shouted at last. And the emperor winced, for he felt they were right. But he thought to himself: “I must go through with the procession now.” And he drew himself up more proudly than ever, while the chamberlains walked behind him, bearing the train that wasn't there. ~ The Emperor's New Suit

The Complete Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales
Hans Christian Andersen is celebrated throughout the world for fairy tales that live generation after generation. This anthology, a collection of nearly 160 Andersen fairy tales, contains the old favorites such as “The Ugly Duckling”, “Thumbelina,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “The Brave Tin Soldier” as well as lesser known tales. Full page illustration as well as the front piece by Arthur Rackham.

Hans Christian Andersen: The Misunderstood Storyteller
The 2005 bicentenary of Hans Christian Andersen's birth is an opportunity to reevaluate the achievement of one of the great figures of the fairy tale and storytelling tradition, a beloved writer famous for The Snow Queen and The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling and The Red Shoes and many other now classic tales. Jack Zipes broadens our understanding of Andersen by exploring the relation of the Danish writer's work to the development of literature and of the fairy tale in particular. Based on thirty-five years of researching and writing on Andersen, this new book is a welcome reconsideration of Andersen's place and of his reception in English-speaking countries and on film. The Young Hans Christian Andersen
Hans Christian Anderson was born in the slums of Odense, Denmark. His parents were hardworking, and Hans received little formal education, but his childhood was his opening to the world of folklore and fairy tales. Much of his work depicts characters who gain happiness in life after suffering and conflicts and many of his childhood experiences inspired his most famous tales, such as The Ugly Duckling and The Little Mermaid. In this intimate and gripping biography of one of the world's greatest storytellers, Karen Hesse and acclaimed artist Erik Blegvad connect Hans's own experiences. Grades 2-4 [book description]

The Amazing Paper Cuttings of Hans Christian Andersen
Hans Christian Andersen, the Danish storyteller whose fairy tales are known all over the world, was also a gifted artist. He made hundreds, perhaps thousands, of paper cuttings of swans, clowns, toy theaters, windmills, angels, and other whimsical images. Often he made the paper cuttings while telling a story, then gave them to the children listening to him. In this inspired biography, Beth Wagner Brust tells the story of Andersen as an artist who used his many talents to escape the poverty into which he was born and who entertained others with not only his famous stories but also his innovative and original art. I Breathe, I Am Alive! The Flowers of Hans Christian Andersen
Illustrated with color reproductions of Flower Paintings.

Hans Christian Andersen as an Artist
This is the largest selection of Hans Christian Andersen's visual art ever to have been presented in one book. Without having had any knowledge of Andersen's visual art, van Gogh was convinced that only a visual artist could write the way Andersen did. In a warm, precise style, Heltoft emphasizes the connection between Andersen's writing and his visual art, and presents the book's wealth of illustrative material in an entirely original way within a framework of excerpts from Andersen's works, correspondence and diary entries.
We cannot help being moved by the originality and charm of Andersen's visual art, but not until modernism's expansion of the concept of art have we come to understand the values in his naivistic drawings, surrealistic collages and subtly executed paper cuts. They are all based on a pronounced ability to observe and an uncompromising artistic instinct.
By means of modern reproduction techniques, the drawings in this book have been restored to their original graphic beauty, and the festive coloring of the paper cuts has been re-created. New material has been added, and works that have been lost have now been reproduced from the author's archives and in this way serve to make the book additionally interesting. It represents the best starting-point for an appreciation of Andersen's gifts as a visual artist. [book description]
