"As You Like It ", a pastoral comedy set in the Forest of Arden in a French duchy, was written c. 1600 by William Shakespeare and drawn from a story by Thomas Lodge.

It is interesting to note that William Shakespeare's mother was Mary Arden.

Shakespeare's character Touchstone is the archetypal wise and comic fool, putting himself and everyone else (including the audience) to the test and guiding to a virtuous conclusion.

The use of “touchstone” for the character's name is metaphorical use of the stone used to test for adulteration of valuable metals.

John Pritt Harley (1786–1858), an English actor, is best remembered for his comic acting and singing.

Orlando, the romantic male lead in As You Like It, is the youngest son of the deceased Sir Roland de Boys, and persecuted by his elder brother Oliver.

John Braham (1774-1856) is best remembered as a tenor opera singer.
