Sometime in his twenties Beethoven began to suffer a hearing loss and by the age of 30 his tinnitus, a “roaring” in his ears, made it difficult to engage in conversation and appreciate music. This hearing loss lead to a depression and contemplation of suicide; eventually Beethoven resolved to continue living through his art.
Because of his hearing empediment Beethoven kept “conversation books”, a form of journaling, that has provided scholars with a unique historical record of his thoughts.
