A black woman in an authorative role was unpredented in the 1960s and both astronaut Mae Jemison and actress Whoopi Goldberg have cited Nichols as inspiration and encouragement for their career paths.
Nichols also sang with Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton before turning to acting.
