Early in her career she was the “girl-next-door” then became a liberated woman in comedies, finally appearing in historical and period films - all overcoming her own accessment of herself as a “dumpy figure, with shoulders too broad, legs too sturdy, hands too blunt” and having small eyes that appeared crossed because of a “cast” in her right eye.
Norma Shearer was married to film producer Irving Thalberg.
