Anna Mary Robertson Moses, better known as Grandma Moses, is best know for depicting rural America, began painting after arthritis made doing embroidery too difficult. Her work came from both an urge to be practical - a gift that was easier to do than bake a cake, and to use the materials at hand.

Gabriele Münter
