Sonia Delaunay (née Terk)

Sonia Delaunay's modern design work of geometric abstraction was iintegrated into furniture, fabrics, wall coverings, and clothing. She and her husband Robert Delaunay were part of a group called Orphism, related to cubism, that moved to convey the existence of an infinitude of interrelated states of being (Simultanism) through more abstraction and bright colors. Einstein published his Special Theory of Relativity in 1905 - the scientific expression of the same idea.

Francoise Duparc
b. 10-15-1726; Murcia, Spain
d. 10-2-1778; Marseille, France
Francoise Duparc was the daughter of a Spanish mother and French father, Antoine, who was a sculptor. As an adult Duparc returned to France where she worked professionally and was elected to the Academy of Marseilles in 1777.

Lavinia Fontana

d. 8-11-1624; Rome
Lavina Fontana, the daughter of the painter Prospero Fontana, who was also her teacher. As was common at the time children carried on the family business and Lavina was not an exception.
She married, had eleven children, with her husband acting as her painting assistant.

Helen Frankenthaler

Abstract expressionist painter Helen Frankenthaler was made major contributions to art in the 20th century. Her canvases have the look of watercolors though they are painted in oil. Frankenthaler was married to Robert Motherwell from 1958 to 1971.
