The love story of Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini juxtaposes a cultural collision between East and West. Cio-Cio-San (Madame Butterfly), an ex-Geisha, abandons her ancient traditions and marries an American Naval officer, Lt. Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton. When Pinkerton abandons Madame Butterfly, and then returns with his American wife to take their child from her, Butterfly's only recourse is hara kiri, ritual suicide.

The inspiration of the opera Madama Butterfly was a short story, "Madame Butterfly" (1898) by John Luther Long that was dramatized by impresario David Belasco, and the novel Madame Chrysanthème (1887) by Pierre Loti.
