Thomas Nast
b. 9-27-1840; Landau, Germany
d. 12-7-1902; Guayaquil, Ecuador (yellow fever)
Caricaturist and editorial cartoonist Thomas Nast is called the “father of the American Cartoon”. Among his accomplishments were bringing down the Tammanay Hall machine, identifying the Republican and Democratic parties with an elephant and donkey respectively, drawing Santa Claus as a bearded, plump man, and a lanky Uncle Sam as the image of the U.S.
Nast served as Theodore Roosevelt's Consul General to Equador and died there as he helped U.S. citizens escape a deadly yellow fever epidemic.
