Genetics is a branch of biology, the study of life. The word “genetics” is based on the Greek word genos, “origin” and is the study of genes, the units encoded with information (DNA and RNA) that controls the physical development and behavior of the organism.

Traits, or characteristics of an organism, are passed from one generation to the next (inherited); changes in environmental conditions from what the genes are accustom to will influence the success or failure of the organism.

Mitosis

“All change is a miracle to contemplate; but it is a miracle which is taking place every instant.” ~ Henry David Thoreau

The process of mitosis, when the cell makes an identical copy of each chromosome into two identical halves, occurs when cells divide for growth or repair.

Meiosis

The process of meiosis begins with a single cell containing 46 chromosomes and results in four reproductive cells (sperm or eggs), each of which carries 23 chromosomes. An important feature of these four cells is that the combination of genes they carry on their 23 chromosomes is a unique mix of the genes present in the original single cell.

Gregor Johann Mendel was a botantist and an Augustinian priest remembered for his study of the inheritance of traits in pea plants. Called the “Father of Modern Genetics” for his work, Mendel's observations showed that the inheritance of traits follow particular laws, which were later named after him (Mendelian inheritance).

In the field of genetics, which is the study of how living things pass on features to their offspring, Barbara McClintock was so far ahead of her time that it took decades for her contributions to be recognized and celebrated. She challenged the accepted ideas in her field, both with her findings and simply because she was a woman researcher. ...more
