South Carolina, known as the “Palmetto State”, was one of the original 13 colonies, joined the Union on May 23, 1788 as the 8th state, and was the first state to cede from the Union at the American Civil War. The Carolinas are named after Charles II of England.



South Carolina, in the South Atlantic Region, is bounded on the north by North Carolina, to the east by the Atlantic Ocean, and the south and west by Georgia.
