Ernst Haeckel

d. 8-8-1919

Haeckel, an eminent German biologist, naturalist, philosopher, physician, professor and artist, named thousands of new species and coined the biological terms phylum, phylogeny, and ecology. He was also a supporter of Charles Darwin.

Samuel Hahnemann
b. 4-10-1755; Saxony
d. 7-2-1843; Paris

German physician Samuel Hahnemann created the alternative practice of medicine called homeopathy. Homeopathy interprets diseases and sickness as caused by disturbances in a hypothetical vital force or life force.

Hahnemann insisted that disease was part of the “living whole”, rejecting the idea of a disease as a separate thing or invading entity.

William Harvey
b. 4-1-1578; England
d. 6-3-1657

William Harvey, a physician, described the circulatory system as blood being pumped around the body by the heart before returning to the heart and being re-circulated in a closed system in 1616, and published his work in 1628.

Henry Heimlich
b. 2-3-1920; Wilmington, DE

Heimlich, whose name is associated with a maneuver to rescue choking victims, is being debunked by one of his adult sons. Peter Heimlich and his wife Karen have uncovered Dr. Heimlich's relentless self promotion of a string of crackpot medical treatments and appropriation of ideas from other doctors and attaching his name to them. Virginia Henderson
b. 3-19-1897; Kansas City, MO
d. 11-30-1996; Connecticut

Virginia Henderson, a nurse and educator, was awarded the first Christianne Reimann Prize by the International Council of Nurses, as the author of the landmark text Basic Principles of Nursing Care.

Constantine Hering

Constantine Hering, an early pioneer of homeopathy in the U.S., studied medicine and had been engaged to write a rebutal for the practice of homeopathy, when he first read, and then befriended Samuel Hahnemann, and was converted in Hahnemann's thinking.
