Thomas Hodgkin

Thomas Hodgkin, a pioneer in preventive medicine, was a Quaker dedicated to the betterment of those around him by actively participating in the abolition of slavery and American Indians rights. He is also the remembered for the first account of Hodgkin's disease, a form of lymphoma and blood disease. (FYI - Hodgkin noted that perhaps the earliest reference to the condition was provided by Marcello Malpighi in 1666.)

Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.
b. 8-29-1809; Cambridge, Massachusetts
d. 10-7-1894; Boston
Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., a physician and Professor of Anatomy & Physiology, published in 1843 The Contagiousness of Puerperal Fever which argued that puerperal fever, a deadly disease of women giving birth, was frequently carried from patient to patient by physicians and nurses.
Holmes had earlier achieved fame as a writer and poet with his poem “Old Ironsides” which saved the 18th century wooden Navy frigate USS Constitution from being scraped in the 1830s (she is now the oldest commissioned ship afloat in the world). Holmes was also one the ‘Fireside Poets’ group that also included Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, William Cullen Bryant, John Greenleaf Whittier, and James Russell Lowell.

Alberta Hunter

Blues singer, songwriter, and nurse, Alberta Hunter started her musical career in the early 1920s, and became a successful recording artist. Hunter retired from performing in the 1950s and became a nurse; she resumed her singing career in her eighties.
