Québec City, founded in 1608 on the north bank of Saint Lawrence River by French explorer Samuel de Champlain, is one of the oldest cities in North America.

The name Québec is from an Algonquin word, Kébec, meaning “where the river narrows”.

Québec City is the capital of the Canadian province of Québec, and a major cultural center of the French-speaking world, as well as an important tourist destination.

Quito, the capital city of Ecuador, is located on the eastern slopes of Pichincha, an active stratovolcano in the Andes Mountains. In October of 1999, the volcano erupted and covered the city with several inches of ash.

Quito is the second largest city in Ecuador (the largest is the port city of Guayaquil), and at an altitude of 9,200 feet, one of the highest capital cities in the world. Quito derives its name from the original Native American inhabitants, the Quitu tribe.
